Arts
State Library of South Australia
The State Library of South Australia has a wide variety of volunteer roles available which help make our state’s collections more accessible both online and onsite. There are roles for library Ambassadors, digital volunteers, oral history tagging, identifying World War I soldiers, and newspaper transcribers.
Art Gallery of South Australia
If you enjoy art, consider volunteering with the Art Gallery of South Australia has a Front of House volunteer or a Gallery Guide. Both roles help connect the public with art and promote the role of the Gallery and its collection.
Education
Volunteer mentors assist students of all ages to reach their full potential by bringing young people together with caring individuals who offer guidance, support and encouragement.
TAFE SA Volunteer Tutor Scheme
If you’re interested in volunteering and meeting new people from different cultural backgrounds, TAFE SA runs a tutor program to help migrants with English language development and Australian settlement skills.
Environment
Becoming a volunteer ranger is a great way to get outdoors and help support the management of South Australia’s parks and reserves. If you have a passion for the environment and want to help connect people with nature – and live in regional areas of South Australia – then this is the volunteer role for you.
Want to join others and become a friend of a park? By joining a Friends of Park group, you can take part in working bees, training and other events. Friends of Parks SA has nearly 150 members across the state and is suitable for people of all ages.
Department of Primary Industries and Regions Fishcare volunteers are a familiar sight along South Australian jetties, beaches, rivers and community events. With their blue uniforms, volunteers regularly provide recreational fishers with important fishing information and help protect our aquatic life for future generations.
Community
Rail Care SA volunteers program
If trains and transport is your thing, volunteer for the Rail Care SA program run by Adelaide Metro. With more than 170 like-minded people across 41 rail networks, the program involves hands-on gardening, community engagement and public art projects.
The Department for Correctional Services has a variety of volunteer roles that provide support to prisoners and services offered within South Australian prisons. Positions include in transport, library services, like skills, prisoner art and community mentor programs.
The Court Volunteer Service provides a vital link between the court and its clients and helps maintain a high level of service for all court users. Volunteers assist the court to run smoothly by providing various types of information, directions, pamphlets and referrals.
Volunteering in Child Protection
Volunteers are a valuable part of our state’s child protection system. There are opportunities to volunteer across the state in a range of roles including transport, recreational activities, homework support groups and departmental events. Volunteers must be aged 18 or older and hold a Working with Children check.
Emergency Services
Volunteers are the heartbeat of our state’s emergency services. There are a range of volunteer positions available within the Country Fire Service, SA Ambulance, State Emergency Service, South Australia Police and Volunteer Marine Rescue.
Health
Public hospitals in metropolitan Adelaide and country South Australia have a range of volunteering opportunities available including guide services, retail outlets, ward activities and special support programs. Volunteers are encouraged to contact the hospitals directly or search volunteer on the SA Health website.
